THE KORZYBSKI INSTITUTE The Korzybski Institute was founded in 1982 by Luc Isebaert, Myriam Lefevere de ten Hove and Louis Cauffman as a training institute in systemic and Ericksonian psychotherapy. The first distinctive feature in its teaching, and the first element of the Bruges model, was the insight that pathology could be characterized as the loss of the freedom of choice: clients were doing things, feeling emotions, thinking thoughts that didn’t match the kind of persons they wanted to be. So the task of the therapist became to restore the client’s freedom of choice. This led to a then radical reappraisal of the therapist’s position: instead of telling the client what to do in order to solve his problems and discard his symptoms, the therapist’s attention was focused on the goals of the client, his competences and the exceptions to his problematic behavior. In 1990, having invited Steve de Shazer, his thinking appeared so close to ours that it became evident we were part of the Solution Focused movement. |
